Most students who just finished their pre-u are having problems when choosing a laptop for their university courses. I will first explain some basic component that builds up a laptop and what types of laptop suits you the best. Also, I will include some tips of the smart buyers when purchasing a laptop so the products you buy worth your money spent.

What you need to know?

Processor

There is two brands of processors there are very well known. They are Intel and AMD. Below I will explain how to differentiate the symbols and generation for both brands. If you are asking which brand is better, I can only say that both can be on par with each other but somehow AMD is cheaper.

Intel

intel process model number
Intel Processor Model Number

For Intel, the letter “i” is the CPU series. There are other CPU series such as Intel Xeon for desktop processor.

“i” series processor consists of i3 i5 i7 i9. The highest laptop can go is i7 in the market. As the number gets higher, the performance gets better, so as the price.

The next or next two digits after the “-” indicates the generations. For example, i7-9750H is a 9th gen processor while i7-10700K is a 10th gen processor.

The numbers after the gen indicator represent the performance by the processor. The higher the number, the higher the performance.

The last part of the description is a English letter or a letter accompanied by a number.

-U represent Ultra Low Power (Long battery endurance laptop)

-H represent High Performance (Gaming Laptop)

-G5 represent Intel Iris Plus G5 Graphic Card

-G7 represent Intel Iris Plus G7 Graphic Card

AMD

For AMD, Ryzen is the CPU series. There are other CPU series such as Athlon.

“Ryzen” series processor consists of Ryzen 3, Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9. As the number gets higher, the performance gets better, so as the price.

The next digit after the “-” indicates the generations. For example, Ryzen 5-3500U is a 3rd gen processor while Ryzen 7-4600H is a 4th gen processor.

-HS represent high performance and saving power at the same time

You can find processor number description through below steps:

  1. Press “Window ” button on keyboard.
  2. Type in “This PC” in Search.
  3. Right click the icon of “This PC”.
  4. Click on the “Properties”
  5. You can find information such as model number, processor description number, RAM capacity and etc.

Suggestion:

  • For browsing internet, watching videos, basic document editing, Intel Core i3 series and AMD Ryzen 3 series CPU is sufficient enough
  • For a Gamer, use at least Intel Core i5 series or AMD Ryzen 5 series CPU as the graphic of gaming is more depending on GPU
  • For a Programmer, use at least Intel Core i5 series or AMD Ryzen 5 series CPU
  • For a Youtuber, if you are doing Video Editing and Video Rendering, it is preferable to use Intel Core i7 series or AMD Ryzen 7 series CPU
  • For 3D Artist,if you are 3D modelling,it is preferable to use Intel Core i7 series or AMD Ryzen 7 series CPU

RAM (Random Access Memory)

We can understand RAM as memories a laptop need when running several programs/ software simultaneously. For university students, you need at least 8GB to make sure of a fluent performance of your laptop. Be aware that all the laptops on the market are usually at 4GB RAM only. My suggestion is to add up another 8GB RAM at the 2nd RAM slot on the laptop. (8GB+4GB=12GB)

Most editing software such as photoshop, adobe premier pro requires minimum 8GB. However, based on past users experience, 12GB is a better choices as it is smoother.

GPU, graphic processing unit (most people known it as graphic card)

at least

MX250 and MX330 Nvidia graphic are usually found for lightweight laptop and it is sufficient enough for light gaming and editing photos and videos.

For those who prefer to play heavy game using their laptop. GTX1050 or GTX1650 Nvidia Graphic card is needed.

You can find processor number description through below steps:

  1. Press “Window ” button on keyboard.
  2. Type in “Device Manager” in Search.
  3. Open “Device Manager”.
  4. Click on “Display adapters”.
  5. It will shown your laptop motherboard graphic and graphic card model.

SSD/ HDD

SSD is a must for every laptop. No matter how great your processor is, your laptop is still gonna be slow if you are using a HDD. SSD is more pricey compared to HDD. However, here is a tips that can save you moneys.

You can choose to use SSD for operating system (C), at least 256GB, plus another storage of HDD (D) 256GB/ 500GB/ 1TB

Another option you have is 512GB of SSD, you can then ask the shop owner to do partition so your (C) and (D) can both have 256GB

Some might ask, what is the difference between SSD/ HDD and RAM? Why SSD/ HDD required so much capacity while RAM required smaller capacity?

The difference is that SSD/ HDD store constant memories such as software default setting, color, templates and so on while RAM stores variable/ changeable/ accessible memories and RAM space is only occupied when a software is running its program.

Choices:

Gaming Laptop

Pros: High Spec, high graphic, high performance

Cons: Expensive, high battery consumption, heavy

Office/ Portabe laptop

Pros: Lightweight, low battery consumption, high-average pricing

Cons: Moderate/ Low graphic

Surface/ Ipad/ Tablet

Most students who is a step away into university thought a tablet can completely replace a laptop. This is totally a wrong thought. There is still a lot of laptop software that a tablet cannot sustain.

However, having a tablet will certainly increase your efficiency on reading pdf note and do your own electronic note. Still, you must have a laptop before having a tablet.

Extra tips:

Purchasing of laptop always comes with free gift such as mouse, keyboard and most importantly, laptop bag. Don’t be shy or afraid to ask those basic equipment from the shop owner.

Also, bulk purchase will lower down the total price. If you want to add on buying Wacom, Macbook Adapter,…, do buy it together with the laptop so the shop keeper can give you a better price.

Make sure your warranty is at least two years (after usage of two years, you wont feel so sad to replace your previous laptop with all the flaws and lagging you made)

We hope that this post is insightful for you. Good luck and all the best!
